In New Jersey, those blue lights are commonly used by volunteer firefighters and EMS personnel responding to emergencies.

🔵 What are blue lights?
Blue lights are warning lights placed on a volunteer’s personal vehicle to indicate they are responding to an emergency call. These lights help alert other drivers that someone is on their way to assist in a critical situation.

📜 New Jersey Laws & Permits
In New Jersey, blue lights are strictly regulated:
• Volunteers must be active members in good standing of a fire company, EMS, or rescue squad.
• They must apply for and receive an official blue light permit (ID card) through the state.
• The permit must be carried at all times when using the light and shown to law enforcement if requested.
• Blue lights may only be used while responding to an emergency call.

🚗 Blue Lights Do NOT Make You Above the Law
This is one of the most important points:
• Volunteers must obey all traffic laws while responding.
• Blue lights do NOT give the same legal privileges as police, fire trucks, or ambulances.
• Speeding, running red lights, or unsafe driving is not permitted.

⚠️ Courtesy – Not Command
When you see a blue light behind you:
• It is a courtesy request, not a legal command like a siren-equipped emergency vehicle.
• If safe to do so, please move to the right and allow them to pass.
• Do not block intersections or create unsafe conditions.

❤️ Why It Matters
Every second counts in an emergency. Many of our volunteers respond from home, work, or while spending time with their families. That blue light may be someone rushing to help a neighbor, friend, or even a loved one.

Your cooperation helps us get there faster—and safer.

🙏 Thank you for supporting your local volunteers!
